About Rain Are In Clouds

This is considered to be a preview for the A/V-album “Rain Are In Clouds” by DEPART. The videos on this album are a combination of eletronic sound and abstract 3D shapes generated in realtime via the software processing (www.processing.org). The musical data is processed and transformed into shapes and movements, providing the viewer with the artists vision of what sound could look like if it was not merely air that is moving around us. The basic idea for each of the provided videos was to create “narratives” that would, albeit rather constructed and abstract, create an organic feel and a little bit of a story. Parts of the sound or also the musical composition are taken into account as “actors” on the visual stage. Playing and interacting with each other, they not only accompany but impersonate the sounds.

About Depart

In contrast to more minimalistic and “dry” approaches in the field of A/V performances, DEPART like to create funky and colourful moments both in sound and image. So they also search for scenes where the rigid formulas and reductionism of abstract art turn into beautiful, dreamy scapes as seen in “Haemlin Hoop” or sometimes even funny moments like the appearance of the growing, colourful shape in “Umps Unzin” or the constant to and fro juxtapose of the pyramid and the triangle in “Pynnochyo’s Pyramid”.
Looking for small dramaturgic changes and sudden twists and turns, the work of DEPART may also be related to choreography, where the combination vs. contradiction of moving body and sounding air is always on display and a huge part of the artistic struggle to achieve a coherent piece. But descriptions are never sufficient enought to describe the actual “happening”, so to use a rather threadbare and also disputable phrase as a conclusion here, the videos “speak for themselves”. Or more tongue-in-cheekily put (based loosely on a quote by Thelonious Monk): “DEPART talk about music via dancing architecture !”
