For this afternoon the Brussels based design team OSP (Open Source Publishing) will conduct a workshop/open source jam session and give a presentation in which they further explore and explain the system and concepts behind the project Cimatics.font. OSP won a Plantin-Moretus award in 2009 for their design of the publication 'Mediakunst in Vlaanderen'. In July 2009 OSP designed a font called Cimatics. Where other fonts have variations such as Bold and Italic, the Cimatics font comes with a Base, Dust, Noise, Trash, Mono, Full_Regular and Full_Mono version, describing the amount of infiltrating pictograms in the font. The Cimatics font is designed to be a generic design tool. By this O.S.P. delivers an open source system, allowing other designers in the future to play with it. For this — and inspired by the SMS, Twitter and emoticon age — OSP collected and designed 27 pictograms (dingbats) that could express the variety of the Cimatics identity: the Brussels 'pentagon', the he

A kitchen dingbats workshop: derived from the OSP workshop series 'Print Party'
To be clear: this is NOT a party but an open jam session or workshop. It is derived from the OSP workshop series called 'Print Party'. A Print Party is typically hard to describe: it is a mixture of different ingredients but there is always some food involved and the focus is on open source graphic design tools and methods. For this Cimatics edition, the workshop has been converted into an open jam session which again has no clear shape, recipe or result. Nonetheless, there will be cake, Unicode and Dingbats. The ingredients: 2 electric ovens, 16 eggs, 1 kg of butter, 1 kg of fine white sugar, 1 kg of flour, 3 aprons, 1 squeegee in rubber (to scrape the dishes with facilitated), 1 roll of baking paper, 1 pair of scissors, 2 tablespoons, 4 forks, 4 wooden spoons, 1 blender, 1 sieve (for flour), 2 hand whisks, 2 big salad bowls, 4 identical fruitcake molds, 36 plates, 36 cups, 36 spoons, 36 sugar cubes,...

Presenting the Cimatics.font: the typographic design process that connects the Cimatics platform identity with Verbindingen/Jonctions 12. Dingbats have sneaked into most computers nowadays.
Dingbats are there for grabbing. It's just a matter of locating them in your hard disk. For Cimatics the graphic design has always been one of the artistic aspects of the festival; more then worth to be mentioned in the program. Previously we've been working with Michael C. Place from Designers Republic, London or the Norwegian Marius Watz. This year there is the Cimatics font. In a single hour presentation the Brussels based designers 'OSP' explains their development and extension of a pictures/glyph translation process. Around dingbats and into the em, OSP will present an attempt (crack) to develop images contained into data and Unicode standards (or its negative). The Showery Weather, the Have a Nice Day!, and the black blocks of the Unicode standard are circumventing the old AsciiArt engine to generate matrix landscapes populated by text. --- A kitchen dingbats workshop will precede the presentation.'Dingbat Liberation Fest' from 2 to 5 pm.
