Opening Night
at FLU POWER FLU
F

You may expect the opening night of Cimatics festival 2009 to be a kaleidoscopic experience. As diverse as the festival is the opening night. The night starts early, at sunset (16h48) to be precise when we switch on the sped up version of Stefano Cagol's Flu Power Flu installation. For Cimatics festival opening night the neon letters will blink 5 times as fast as normally. Later that night AGF brings a very poetic downbeat performance from her new album Einzelkaempfer. And after that we roll into a musical and audiovisual party with performances by Ben Butler & Mousepad from Berlin and the Canadian TVestroy. The night starts early but goes on late, closing down at the Flu Power Flu with the whirl-winding tunes from Baleine 3000 and Cimatics after-party at the infamous Box Club.

Speed UP the FLU POWER FLU
By Stefano Cagol (Curated by Cimatics)
16:48 → 07:31
Italy
intervention
Since September 2007 the 12 meters neon writing FLU POWER FLU by Italian artist Stefano Cagol highlights physical and mental influences, positive and negative points of power in the capital of Nato and of Europe, in front of the former financial-market center, on the former casino, on the actual Beursschouwburg Art Center. For the festival opening night, Cimatics re-appropriates the semi-permanent installation by temporarily speeding up the flickering of the neon words. For 24 hours the installation will go 5 times as fast. By this, converted it into an event, it is re-mixed with the festival and re-activated as an urban landmark.
Urban Lone Warrior Forest
By AGF

Germany (2009)
performance
As opening performance of Cimatics festival, AGF presents 'urban lone warrior forest', a highly poetic and rather downbeat audiovisual performance based on her yet to be released sixth solo album entitled 'Einzelkaempfer', or Lone Warrior (release Nov 6). With Lone Warrior AGF investigates musical and lyrical themes concerning solitary beings and actions. 'It is a lot about NOT being in the city, withdrawing from the masses, mass movement or overstimulation...'.

Singular_c_ity
By Yves Marquillie
22:00 → 01:00
Belgium (2009)
installation
Singularity is an audiovisual installation that confronts the viewer with the recursive states of the physical and the virtual. They are both dependent on each other, as is the installation towards the viewer, and the visuals to the audio. What is presented as a monolithic object filled with mathematical references is reflected in the mental state of the viewer in the form of associations. These resemblances are then projected again by the viewer towards the object; the object itself becomes the visual manifestation of how an idea grows in complexity.

performance
Presented on triple screens and on a series of CRT televisions, TVestroy is an experiment with the links between image and sound materials, leveraging all of their potential 'drasticality'. Generated from the same source, sounds and images are not only in synch - they emerge concurrently. The sound IS the image. Hypnotic and heady, this work of art - qualified as 'electrovideoacoustic' by its two creators - engulfs the audience in an environment made out of geometrical abstractions and de-structured rhythmic phrases way beyond any compromise.
